Environmental Sanitation Tax – Effective February 1, 2023

Please be advised that Mexico has implemented an Environmental Sanitation Tax for specific resort areas. This tax is charged per room, per night and must be paid directly by guests at the hotel. Rates are as follows:

  • Cancun: 72.62 MXN pesos (Taxes (subject to change without warning))

  • Puerto Morelos / Riviera Maya: 31.12 MXN pesos (Taxes (subject to change without warning))

This amount is not included in your vacation package and will be collected at check-in or check-out. Funds from this tax support the protection, maintenance, and conservation of the region’s natural beauty and infrastructure.

VISITAX – Quintana Roo Tourism Tax

As of April 1, 2021, the state of Quintana Roo requires all foreign visitors to pay a Tourism Tax (VISITAX) of 283 MXN pesos (approximately $14 USD). This is a mandatory fee for travelers visiting areas including Cancun, Tulum, Playa del Carmen, Cozumel, and Isla Mujeres. (Taxes (subject to change without warning))

Important Notes:

  • Payment can be made online before travel, upon arrival, or during your stay.

  • The tax must be paid before departure, and proof of payment (QR code) will be required at the airport.

You will need to provide:

  • Number of travelers

  • Name, age, and passport number for each person

  • Departure date

Please ensure payment is made through the official website to avoid scams or inflated fees.

Every tourist departing the state of Quintana Roo must show their proof of payment at the airport prior to boarding.
